FIELD JOURNAL, 2022
Throughout the Pratt Institute course Adaptations and Alterations of Historic Landmarks, in which students studied the complex issue of changing historic structures and structures within historic districts, I maintained a field journal of sketches and observations documenting each of our near-weekly site visits.
MONUMENTS DEBATE PRESENTATION, 2021
For an assignment in the introductory course History and Theory of Preservation, I researched the Lion of Lucerne Monument at the Confederate Memorial State Historic Site in Higginsville, Missouri.
Originally a home for Confederate veterans from 1891 to 1950, the Confederate Memorial includes a farmhouse where soldiers and their families lived, a chapel, and a cemetery with the Lion of Lucerne monument. In the presentation, I explored the nuanced circumstances of the case, including how the site’s history as a Confederate veterans’ home and its positioning within a sprawling state park has influenced public opinion about the Confederate memorial.
