With interest in Route 66 surging ahead of the highway’s centennial in 2026 — and 2SLGBTQ+ rights under attack in many states it traverses — the Route 66 2SLGBTQ+ Historic Sites Project will serve as a timely educational and tourism resource. It will illuminate the queer travel experience and uncover the presence and resilience of 2SLGBTQ+ lives along this storied road. The project will feature an interactive map with short illustrated entries, with priority given to extant sites located directly on Route 66 that gained significance before its 1985 decommissioning.
